Recently, International Gymnastics Camp received a request from two U.K. students to begin a fundraising project that would raise money to send a deserving gymnast to camp. Jessie and Ella, both seventh graders at the Wycombe Abbey School in Buckinghamshire, U.K., have reached their goal raising $913 in just a few short weeks!
The girls chose to raise the money as part of earning the Dove Award, a service-orientated program open to students at their school. A large part of the program requires students to assist at a charity or organization of their choice by volunteering or raising money through fundraisers. Jessie and Ella chose to send a gymnast to IGC because of the enjoyable experience they shared at camp in 2011. “We enjoyed our experience because we made a lot of friends and learned a lot of gymnastics,” said Jessie. “It would be really nice for a deserving gymnast to have the same experience.” Through several bake sales and a donation from their previous school, the girls were able to grant the wishes of a 12-year-old girl whose only dream is to attend IGC.
Choosing a candidate to sponsor was an extremely hard decision for both girls. “We hope all of the applicants will keep doing gymnastics and having lots of fun.” IGC Director, Brent Klaus, was so touched by Jessie and Ella’s selfless donation that he matched the money the girls raised to send another commendable gymnast to camp.
IGC is exceptionally grateful to Jessie and Ella for all of their self-sacrificing hard work. Their fundraising efforts have been an inspiration to the entire IGC team.
Thank you, Jessie and Ella.
As the countdown to camp narrows down, parents make mental notes of what to include in their camper’s suitcase. Deciding what to pack for a week of fun and gymnastics can be a little confusing, especially for a first-time camper. To get a head start on IGC 2012, we’ve created a list of general recommended items to bring along.
General clothing: 4-6 leotards for girls and workout clothing for boys (must be worn during all gymnastics classes; fitted workout tees may be worn over leotard), t-shirts, shorts, underwear, bathing suit, sleepwear, TWO towels (shower and pool), swimwear, sweat pants or thigh length shorts for Scary Aerie, sweatshirt and socks
Gym Materials: 1 pair of hand grips (if you wear them) and athletic tape
Footwear: 1 pair of Flip Flops/sandals/Crocs and 1 pair of sneakers (required for Scary Aerie)
Linens and Bedding: 1 fitted (twin size) sheet, 1 fitted (twin size) top sheet, 1 pillow with pillow case, 1 blanket/comforter/sleeping bag, 1 pool towel, 1 shower towel
Toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, soap or shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, brush or comb, deodorant, hair dryer and a shower caddy or basket
Miscellaneous Items: sunscreen, insect repellent, water bottle, stationary, envelopes and stamps
Remember, it does get cold at night and the weather tends to have a mind of its own. Packing an additional set of clothing or sweatpants may come in handy. If items are forgotten or left at home, IGC has a fully stocked canteen with any necessary items you may need available for purchase. A full list of general recommended items to pack and to leave at home is available by checking into your IGC account under the Forms and Documents link. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please direct them to the IGC Facebook page.

Campers are working hard in the gyms and having a blast with friends on the final day of IGC’s 2011 Thanksgiving Clinic. After a healthy breakfast of French toast, eggs, sausage, cereal, fruit, bagels and Danishes gymnasts went back to their cabins and got ready to hit the gyms. Everyone continued working towards their goals with coaches and rotating through different events in 45-minute intervals. There was a lot of great activity from beginner to advanced groups going on in IGC’s five world-class gyms: flexibility and strength, uneven bars, tumbling, parallel bars, rings, pommel horse, balance beam, vault and dance.
Before we knew it, it was lunch time! Grilled cheese, tomato soup, macaroni and cheese, salad with all the trimmings and cookies for dessert…mmm mmmm! Campers enjoyed their meals and headed back down to the Olympic Gym where Stephan Douglass held a short motivational workshop for campers. He asked everyone to get into groups and draw on a sheet of paper what they thought gymnastics would look like in the future. Maybe cabin two is right when they guessed the gym equipment would be floating soon! Stephan also talked to campers about focusing on their grades while they continue to work hard on their goals in the gym. He shared with them a few secrets on how to balance both their school work and their love of the sport.
Will we soon see a world where our gym equipment floats, the balance beam grows two feet longer and the audience sits right next to the apparatus during competitions? We’ll just have to wait and see…
We’ve had a very exciting day one of the 2011 Thanksgiving Clinic! Campers are thrilled to be back in action at IGC on this sunny and crisp November day. Beginner through advanced groups practiced on each event in 45-minutes intervals while Svetlana Boguinskaia and Blaine Wilson roamed the gyms giving athletes their expert gymnastics advice. Chicken nuggets, fries, cheese and broccoli soup was served for lunch with yummy cookies for dessert! The salad bar was even open for business! Tomorrow will be another full day of gymnastics until the time for check-out arrives at 4:45 p.m.
As our Thanksgiving Clinic campers wrapped up a delicious and nutritious dinner of spaghetti, meatballs, vegetables and garlic bread, they made their way to an evening activity station. From 7:30 to 9 p.m. campers got to choose from several different activities: karaoke in the Bear’s Den, games and a snack in the canteen, a movie in the dance gym and t-shirt coloring in the cafeteria. Everyone had a great time singing their favorite songs, hanging out with friends and dancing the night away in the Bear’s Den with their counselors. Next, it was over to the canteen where campers enjoyed different classic games like ping-pong, Uno and Trivial Pursuit. Coloring festive Thanksgiving t-shirts with friends in the cafeteria was by far the favorite activity of the night! Finally, it was to the dance gym where campers sat with friends and staff members through the evening flick, The Goonies.
It was definitely a great Thanksgiving Clinic to remember, and it’s not over yet! After the movie, campers will be heading back to their campers to get some shut eye. Another day of gymnastics fun is up ahead!
We have a lot of videos and photos of day one at the 2011 Thanksgiving Clinic. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates and photo albums.
Campers and parents are making their way down to the canteen for the 2011 Thanksgiving Clinic check-in, free coffee and tea and the magnificent IGC Super Sale!
